Provably fair, explained simply

By the OnchainGambler editorial team · 5 min read · updated 13 July 2026

“Provably fair” is the one genuinely new thing crypto casinos brought to gambling. Instead of trusting that a game isn't rigged, you can mathematically verify that the casino couldn't have manipulated the result after you placed your bet.

The mechanism in one minute

Before you bet, the casino generates a secret server seed and shows you its hash — a fingerprint that commits the casino to that seed without revealing it. You contribute a client seed (usually editable in the settings), and a nonce counts up with each bet you make.

Each game result is computed from server seed + client seed + nonce. Because the casino committed to the server seed before knowing your client seed, it cannot pick outcomes. When you rotate or reveal the server seed later, you can recompute every past result and confirm it matches what you were shown.

How to actually verify a bet

The flow is similar at every provably fair casino:

  • Before playing, note the hashed server seed in the game's fairness settings and set your own client seed.
  • Play as normal — each bet increments the nonce.
  • Rotate the seed pair in settings. The old server seed is revealed.
  • Check the revealed seed hashes to the fingerprint you saw earlier, then use the casino's verifier (or an open-source one) to recompute your past bets.

You don't need to verify every bet. The point is that you can — an operator that cheats a verifiable game would be caught by the first player who checks, which is exactly why they don't.

What provably fair does not cover

Provable fairness applies to a casino's original games — dice, crash, mines, plinko and similar in-house titles. It does not apply to third-party slots (whose RNG lives with the game studio), live dealer tables, or the sportsbook.

It also says nothing about whether the casino pays withdrawals, honors bonuses, or locks accounts. Fair math and fair business are different questions — which is why our index tracks KYC policy, licensing and reputation alongside the provably fair flag.
